AAT is not an independent architecture entrance examination open to every Class 12 student. It is a second-stage pass/fail test available only to candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced. Passing AAT makes a candidate eligible to list the IIT B.Arch programmes in JoSAA; the AAT mark does not create a separate rank. Actual allotment is based on the candidate's category-wise JEE Advanced All India Rank.

1. What AAT is

The Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is the additional eligibility test for the five-year Bachelor of Architecture programmes offered through the IIT system. In the verified 2026 brochure, B.Arch was available at only three IITs:

1. https://www.iitbhu.ac.in/" class="inlink">IIT (BHU) Varanasi

2. https://www.iitkgp.ac.in/" class="inlink">IIT Kharagpur

3. https://www.iitr.ac.in/" class="inlink">IIT Roorkee

The controlling source is the https://jeeadv.ac.in/documents/IBEnglish_2026.pdf" class="inlink">JEE Advanced 2026 Information Brochure, particularly its Architecture Aptitude Test section.

2. The admission chain students must understand

AAT sits in the middle of a longer process:

`JEE Main eligibility route → JEE Advanced registration → qualify JEE Advanced → register for and pass AAT → add IIT B.Arch choices in JoSAA → allotment by JEE Advanced rank → document verification and admission`

This has four consequences:

  • A Class 12 result alone cannot be used to register directly for AAT.
  • A JEE Main Paper 2A B.Arch score is not a substitute for AAT for these IIT B.Arch programmes.
  • Passing AAT without an allotable JEE Advanced rank does not guarantee a seat.
  • AAT qualification must be followed by JoSAA registration and B.Arch choice filling.

3. Who may appear

Only a candidate who has qualified JEE Advanced in the relevant year may register for that year's AAT. The candidate must also satisfy the JEE Advanced and IIT admission conditions, including the applicable Class 12 performance rule.

The verified 2026 brochure required candidates to satisfy either the prescribed aggregate-marks threshold or the category-wise top-20-percentile route in the qualifying examination, subject to the detailed calculation and exceptions in the brochure. Because these rules can change and involve board-specific calculations, students should not reduce them to an isolated “75% rule” without reading the current brochure.

There is no separate broad AAT eligibility route for NATA-qualified candidates. NATA and JEE Main Paper 2A serve other B.Arch admission systems; AAT is specifically tied to JEE Advanced and IIT B.Arch.

4. Registration and cost

Eligible candidates register through the JEE Advanced portal after the JEE Advanced result. The window is short: in the verified 2026 cycle it ran from 1 June at 10:00 IST to 2 June at 17:00 IST. The test followed on 4 June and the result on 7 June.

The official brochure did not prescribe a separate AAT application fee. The candidate uses the JEE Advanced registration and candidate portal. This should not be confused with JoSAA seat-acceptance or institute admission fees, which arise later.

Practical registration checklist:

1. Confirm that the JEE Advanced result shows the candidate qualified/in a rank list.

2. Log in through the official JEE Advanced candidate portal, not a third-party form.

3. Complete AAT registration within the announced window.

4. Save the registration acknowledgement/screenshot.

5. Check the assigned AAT centre on the official portal.

6. Retain the JEE Advanced admit card; no separate AAT admit card is issued.

5. Test pattern and exam-day rules

The official pattern is one paper of three hours. The 2026 paper was available only in English. AAT is conducted in India at the announced zonal IIT centres rather than at the full JEE Advanced test-city network.

Candidates must carry:

  • a printed JEE Advanced admit card;
  • an original valid photo identity card;
  • their own drawing and colouring aids.

The assigned centre notice and current brochure control the permitted materials. Electronic devices and unapproved aids should not be carried.

Eligible candidates with specified disabilities/difficulty in writing may receive the prescribed compensatory time and scribe-related facilities after submitting the required forms. The 2026 brochure provided one hour of compensatory time for the covered candidates. The documentation and definitions must be checked in the current brochure.

6. Official syllabus—what the test is actually assessing

The official https://www.jeeadv.ac.in/documents/aat-syllabus.pdf" class="inlink">AAT syllabus covers five connected abilities.

Freehand drawing

The candidate should depict a simple object in correct form and proportion, including surface texture, relative position and component detail at an appropriate scale. The syllabus points to common domestic or everyday objects drawn from memory.

What this tests:

  • observation and visual memory;
  • proportion and scale;
  • line control;
  • ability to communicate three-dimensional form on paper;
  • selection of relevant detail rather than decorative overload.

Geometrical drawing

This includes lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and circles, along with plans, elevations and views of solids such as prisms, cones, cylinders and cubes.

What this tests:

  • geometric construction;
  • spatial accuracy;
  • relationship between plan, elevation and solid form;
  • clean, legible technical representation.

Three-dimensional perception

Candidates are expected to understand forms with building elements, colour, volume and orientation and to visualise or structure objects from memory.

What this tests:

  • rotation and orientation;
  • mass, void and volume;
  • perspective and depth;
  • ability to infer a 3D object from partial or two-dimensional information.

Imagination and aesthetic sensitivity

The syllabus includes composition with given elements, context mapping, uncommon uses of familiar objects and colour grouping/application.

What this tests:

  • originality within constraints;
  • visual hierarchy;
  • balance, rhythm, contrast and harmony;
  • sensitivity to context rather than attractive drawing alone.

Architectural awareness

Candidates should understand architecture in India and abroad, including places and personalities of national and international importance.

Preparation should connect buildings to architects, location, period, purpose, material, structure and cultural context. Memorising photographs without these relationships is fragile.

7. How AAT is evaluated

The Joint Implementation Committee decides the passing cutoff. Candidates above the cutoff are declared PASS. The official brochure explicitly states that there is no separate AAT ranking.

This is the central cutoff distinction:

  • AAT cutoff: a pass threshold decided for that cycle.
  • JEE Advanced rank: the merit position used for B.Arch seat allocation.
  • JoSAA opening/closing rank: the first and last JEE Advanced category rank allotted for a particular IIT B.Arch seat pool and round.

Therefore, a student should not search for an “AAT rank needed for IIT Roorkee.” The meaningful historical admission evidence is the JoSAA B.Arch opening and closing rank, not an AAT rank.

The official authority does not promise a fixed percentage for passing AAT, and a historical coaching-site cutoff must not be presented as an official permanent threshold.

8. Result and what to do immediately afterward

AAT results are published through the official portal as pass/fail. After a pass:

1. Register on https://josaa.nic.in/" class="inlink">JoSAA if not already registered.

2. Confirm that the AAT qualification is reflected in the candidate workflow.

3. Add the B.Arch programmes the candidate genuinely wants.

4. Place them in true preference order relative to other IIT programmes.

5. Lock/save choices by the deadline.

6. Monitor each allocation round and complete willingness, document upload and fee steps.

Passing AAT does not force a candidate to choose architecture. A qualified candidate may still prefer a B.Tech, BS or other programme for which the JEE Advanced rank is eligible. Conversely, B.Arch will not be allotted merely because AAT was passed if the candidate did not list the programme or the rank does not reach it.

9. How JoSAA allotment works for AAT candidates

JoSAA considers the submitted preference list, eligibility, seat category, rank and seat availability. For IIT B.Arch, the extra eligibility condition is AAT PASS. Allotment remains rank-based.

Choice-order principle:

  • Put the programme you prefer most above the one you prefer less.
  • Do not place a “safer” B.Arch programme above a preferred one just because it closed earlier historically.
  • Do not include an architecture programme you would refuse after allotment.
  • Compare architecture with engineering/science choices on career fit, not only IIT name.

The official https://josaa.admissions.nic.in/applicant/SeatAllotmentResult/CurrentORCR.aspx" class="inlink">JoSAA Opening and Closing Rank service explains that OPEN-seat ranks are Common Rank List ranks, while EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST opening/closing ranks are the respective category ranks. PwD ranks are within the respective PwD category. Mixing these rank types produces false comparisons.

10. IIT B.Arch institutions

This is the complete official IIT B.Arch list stated in the 2026 JEE Advanced brochure. It should be rechecked each cycle because programme offerings can change.

What the five-year programme means

B.Arch is a professional design degree, not an engineering degree with extra drawing. Students should expect studio-based learning, juries and reviews, architectural graphics, building materials and construction, structures, environmental/climatological studies, history and theory, services, digital tools, field documentation and professional training. The workload and assessment culture differ materially from lecture-heavy programmes.

Before choosing it, investigate:

  • whether you enjoy iterative design and critique;
  • comfort with drawing, models and digital production;
  • willingness to spend long blocks in studio work;
  • interest in buildings, cities, people, climate and construction;
  • professional registration and practical-training pathway;
  • total five-year cost and career expectations.

11. Preparation strategy

Build an observation notebook

Draw one everyday object daily from memory, then compare it with the real object. Mark proportion, ellipse, perspective and missing-component errors. Improvement depends on correction, not merely filling pages.

Practise plan–elevation–3D conversion

Move between top, front and side views of simple solids. Combine and subtract forms. Ask which edges are visible, hidden or foreshortened.

Use timed compositions

Take a small set of given shapes/objects and make multiple arrangements. Evaluate focal point, balance, negative space, scale and colour logic. Avoid treating aesthetic sensitivity as ornamentation.

Learn architecture relationally

For every building, record architect, location, approximate period, purpose, material/structure and a distinguishing idea. Group examples by style, climate response, public purpose and construction system.

Practise official past papers

The https://jeeadv.ac.in/archive.html" class="inlink">JEE Advanced archive provides AAT papers across multiple years. Use them to understand task variety and time pressure, not to predict an identical paper.

Simulate the full three hours

Drawing performance changes under fatigue. At least several practices should use the full duration with only the intended exam materials. Reserve final minutes for labels, construction-line cleanup, missed subparts and identity/page instructions.

12. Common mistakes

1. Assuming anyone with Class 12 Mathematics can register directly.

2. Confusing AAT with NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A.

3. Forgetting the very short post-result registration window.

4. Expecting a separate AAT admit card.

5. Looking for an AAT rank when the result is pass/fail.

6. Assuming PASS guarantees B.Arch admission.

7. Ignoring the Class 12 performance condition.

8. Failing to register and fill B.Arch choices in JoSAA.

9. Comparing OPEN CRL with a reserved-category closing rank.

10. Preparing only artistic sketching and neglecting geometry/spatial reasoning.

11. Drawing beautifully but failing to answer the exact prompt.

12. Choosing architecture for the IIT label without understanding five-year studio education.

13. Using third-party dates after the official portal changes a schedule.

13. Documents and reporting

For AAT itself, the official 2026 instructions required the printed JEE Advanced admit card and original photo ID, plus the candidate's drawing/colouring aids. Disability/scribe candidates required the applicable prescribed forms.

For JoSAA and institute admission, candidates should prepare the JEE Advanced/AAT result evidence, allotment letter, Class 10 and 12 records, identity proof, category and PwD certificates where applicable, medical certificate, seat-acceptance payment evidence and other documents in the current JoSAA business rules. Institute reporting can require additional anti-ragging, migration, undertaking and registration documents.

Evergreen update rule

The conceptual chain—JEE Advanced qualification, AAT pass and JoSAA rank-based allotment—is stable but must still be checked annually. Dates, organising IIT, Class 12 rule, test centre list, disability forms, B.Arch-offering institutes, programme seats, JoSAA rules and opening/closing ranks are cycle-specific. They must carry a year label and be refreshed from the current brochure and JoSAA service.
