AILET is National Law University Delhi’s own entrance examination. For undergraduate applicants, it is the route to NLU Delhi’s five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme. Unlike CLAT, which is used by a consortium of participating National Law Universities, AILET does not produce a multi-college preference list: the regular AILET merit route leads to NLU Delhi itself.
NLU Delhi also uses AILET for its one-year LL.M.; that programme has different eligibility and a different paper. This page focuses on the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) examination taken after Class 12.
Why AILET demands a separate strategy
AILET’s verified UG pattern gives 70 of 150 marks to Logical Reasoning, 50 to English and 30 to Current Affairs and General Knowledge. There is no separately labelled Legal Reasoning section. Legal principles may appear inside Logical Reasoning, but official instructions say prior legal knowledge or technical understanding is not required.
The paper has 150 questions in 120 minutes. A candidate therefore has less than one minute per question after allowing time for reading, decisions and OMR handling. The challenge is not only knowledge; it is fast comprehension, disciplined question selection and accuracy under negative marking.
Eligibility
The verified NLU Delhi rules required candidates to pass 10+2 or an equivalent examination with:
- at least 45% aggregate for General/EWS;
- at least 42% for OBC;
- at least 40% for SC/ST/Persons with Disability.
Candidates awaiting their Class 12 result may appear, but must obtain and submit the qualifying result by the university’s notified cutoff. A compartment result in the admission year makes the candidate ineligible under the verified rule. The official FAQ states that there is no minimum or maximum age limit for AILET.
Foreign National and OCI/PIO admissions follow separate rules. The verified scheme exempts applicants under those categories from AILET and prepares their merit from qualifying-examination marks; they must still apply through the notified portal. There is no NRI category.
Always check the admission-year eligibility page because percentage, category and document provisions can be amended.
Application process
1. Create an account on the official AILET portal using an active email address and mobile number.
2. Select B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and enter identity details exactly as recorded in the Class 10 certificate.
3. Enter category, contact, family and Class 10/12 academic details.
4. Select the permitted number of test-city preferences.
5. Upload the specified photograph, signature and applicable category documents.
6. Review the entire form before submission and pay the examination fee.
7. Save the application number and payment acknowledgement.
8. Download the admit card when released and follow the printed reporting instructions.
The official guidelines require original academic and category documents at counselling/admission. An incorrect category claim can affect both rank and admission.
Exam pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 50 | 50 |
| Current Affairs and General Knowledge | 30 | 30 |
| Logical Reasoning | 70 | 70 |
| **Total** | **150** | **150** |
- Mode: offline, pen-and-paper/OMR.
- Duration: 120 minutes.
- Correct answer: +1.
- Incorrect answer: −0.25.
- Unanswered question: 0.
The official pattern, not an old coaching handout, should control preparation. AILET has changed its structure in the past.
What to study
English Language
Prepare for reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, sentence structure, inference, tone, argument and usage. The section rewards careful reading at speed. Do not turn preparation into isolated word-list memorisation: practise identifying why an option is supported by the passage and why the alternatives overstate or distort it.
Current Affairs and General Knowledge
Cover major national and international events, government and constitutional developments, legal and judicial developments, international organisations, economy, science, environment, awards and significant personalities. Build monthly notes from reliable news and primary institutional sources. Revise events through questions that connect person, institution, place, purpose and consequence.
Logical Reasoning
Logical Reasoning is the decisive 70-mark section. Practise conclusions, assumptions, strengthening and weakening arguments, inference, cause and effect, analogy, principle–fact application and short analytical sets. Legal principles may be used as reasoning material, but answer from the principle supplied in the question rather than outside legal knowledge.
A practical 120-minute plan
There is no universally correct section order. Test at least two orders in full mocks and retain the one that produces the best net score.
A sensible starting experiment is:
- Current Affairs/GK: 15–20 minutes;
- English: 35–40 minutes;
- Logical Reasoning: 55–60 minutes;
- OMR/review buffer: 5–10 minutes.
Adjust from evidence. If GK is consuming time without producing marks, use a strict first-pass rule. In English and Logical Reasoning, leave a dense question temporarily rather than sacrificing several easier ones.
Because four wrong answers erase one correct answer, track net marks—not attempts alone. After every mock, classify losses as knowledge, reading, logic, avoidable guess, time pressure or OMR error.
Tie-breaking
Under the verified official scheme, equal total marks are resolved by:
1. higher marks in Logical Reasoning;
2. older candidate;
3. computerised draw of lots.
This reinforces why Logical Reasoning accuracy matters beyond its 70 marks.
Seats and competition
The official 2026 reference matrix contained 120 seats:
| Category | Seats |
|---|---|
| General | 50 |
| OBC-NCL | 24 |
| SC | 17 |
| ST | 8 |
| EWS | 11 |
| **AILET-merit subtotal** | **110** |
| Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO | 10 |
| **Grand total** | **120** |
Six of the 110 domestic seats were shown as horizontal PwD reservations across categories. Seat numbers and conversion rules are cycle-sensitive; verify the live https://nationallawuniversitydelhi.in/ballb/seat-matrix.html" class="inlink">seat matrix.
Cutoff: use marks, rank, category and list correctly
There is no permanent AILET cutoff. Four different ideas are often incorrectly combined:
- eligibility marks in Class 12;
- AILET score;
- rank/counselling-invite range;
- the last selected rank or score in a category and merit list.
NLU Delhi invites more candidates to register for counselling than the number of seats. The verified counselling notice used an approximate ratio of three invitees per available category seat. An invitation is therefore not an admission offer. Only candidates who complete counselling registration and payment are considered for provisional merit lists.
Use official provisional merit-list PDFs to study actual selection. Do not rely on a predicted “safe score” without year, category and list number.
What happens after the result
1. Log in and download the result/scorecard.
2. Check the portal, email and SMS for a counselling invitation.
3. Register for online counselling and pay the notified counselling fee within the deadline.
4. Upload category and other documents requested for verification.
5. Check each category-wise provisional merit list.
6. If selected, pay the provisional admission-confirmation fee on time.
7. Download, sign and upload the offer letter and required undertakings.
8. Pay the balance university fee by the notified date.
9. Produce original Class 10/12, character, transfer and category certificates.
10. Complete reporting and obtain final admission confirmation.
Missing counselling registration removes a candidate from merit-list consideration even if the entrance rank was otherwise competitive.
Course fees and hostel planning
Fees change and should be checked on the official https://nationallawuniversitydelhi.in/ballb/fees.html" class="inlink">B.A. LL.B. fee page. The published 2026 reference included annual tuition, academic-services, welfare and utility charges; one-time admission and refundable estate charges; and separate hostel and mess charges.
The university explicitly says hostel rooms may not be available to every new B.A. LL.B. student. Hostel allocation is based on aerial distance and reservation policy, not AILET rank or board marks. Applicants should therefore budget for non-hostel accommodation as a real possibility.
NLU Delhi lists need-cum-merit assistance and links to government scholarship schemes on its https://nludelhi.ac.in/students/scholarships/" class="inlink">scholarships page.
AILET versus CLAT
| Feature | AILET UG | CLAT UG |
|---|---|---|
| Admission scope | NLU Delhi | Participating consortium NLUs |
| Conducting body | NLU Delhi | Consortium of NLUs |
| Separate application | Yes | Yes |
| Same score interchangeable? | No | No |
| Preparation overlap | English, current affairs, reasoning | English, current affairs, reasoning and other notified CLAT sections |
Most NLU Delhi aspirants should consider both examinations because the applications, scores and admission systems are separate.
