Joint Entrance Examination Advanced

JEE Advanced is the second-stage engineering entrance examination for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology. A designated IIT conducts it under the Joint Admission Board. Indian candidates ordinarily become eligible through performance in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main, but JEE Advanced registration, examination and rank are separate from JEE Main.

The examination leads to programmes such as B.Tech, BS, dual degrees and integrated master's courses notified by participating IITs. Architecture at IITs has an additional Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) after JEE Advanced qualification. Admission is not made by the exam portal itself: qualified candidates must register separately for Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling.

Eligibility: five conditions must be met together

For Indian nationals and the OCI/PIO category treated with Indian candidates, the official framework requires all five criteria:

1. JEE Main performance: the candidate must fall within the specified top group in the B.E./B.Tech paper. The official figure has been 2,50,000, with category-wise distribution and possible extra tied candidates; verify the applicable brochure.

2. Age: the candidate must satisfy the exact date-of-birth cutoff. SC, ST and PwD candidates receive five years' relaxation.

3. Attempts: no more than two attempts in two consecutive years.

4. First Class 12 appearance: the board must have declared the candidate's first Class 12/equivalent result in one of the permitted recent years, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory. An exceptional board-result-date rule can apply as stated in the brochure.

5. Earlier IIT admission: a candidate generally must not have previously accepted/admitted to an IIT programme covered by JoSAA rules. Preparatory-course and withdrawal/non-reporting exceptions are precisely defined.

These are conditions to appear in JEE Advanced. IIT admission adds a Class 12 performance condition: with at least five subjects and PCM compulsory, the candidate must either secure 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or fall within the category-wise top 20 percentile of the relevant board. Aggregate uses Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, the higher-scoring language, and the highest-scoring remaining subject under the official calculation.

Foreign nationals and certain OCI/PIO candidates follow a separate direct-registration and supernumerary-seat framework. They should use the official https://jeeadv.ac.in/foreign.html" class="inlink">foreign-candidate page, not assume JEE Main shortlisting or Indian reservation rules apply.

Registration process

Eligible JEE Main candidates register on the JEE Advanced portal rather than submitting an independent open application months earlier.

1. Confirm all five eligibility criteria, including earlier IIT-seat history.

2. Log in using the required JEE Main credentials and verify personal/academic information.

3. enter examination-city preferences and scribe requirements where applicable.

4. Upload category, PwD, DS, name-change or other certificates in the prescribed form.

5. Pay the applicable fee and ensure registration status is complete.

6. Download and inspect the admit card; preserve it for the result and JoSAA stages.

Certificate format and validity dates matter. A JEE Main category entry does not excuse an invalid JEE Advanced/JoSAA certificate. Exact fee, dates, cities and documents are annual fields.

Exam pattern

JEE Advanced is a computer-based examination with two compulsory papers, each three hours long. Both contain Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A candidate absent from either paper receives no evaluated result or rank.

The question count, total marks, question types and marking combinations can change. Papers can use single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical-value, matching or other comprehension/application formats. Partial marking and negative marking depend on the question instructions. There is no safe universal “+4/−1” rule for the complete paper.

Candidates can view questions in English or Hindi and toggle language in the CBT. If wording differs, the English version governs under the official instructions. The two papers are held in separate sessions on the same day, making endurance, meals, travel and recovery between sessions part of exam planning.

Syllabus and preparation

The official syllabus covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at an advanced problem-solving level rooted in senior-secondary concepts. Use the https://jeeadv.ac.in/documents/jee-advanced-2026-syllabus.pdf" class="inlink">official syllabus PDF as the scope boundary.

A robust preparation system includes:

  • concept mastery from Class 11 and 12 PCM before high-difficulty variants;
  • multi-concept problems that require modelling rather than formula recall;
  • official past papers under full two-paper timing;
  • question-instruction discipline, especially for multiple-correct and partial-mark schemes;
  • an error log separating concept, algebra/calculation, interpretation, selection and time errors;
  • mixed-subject revision so a weak section does not prevent rank-list inclusion;
  • full-day simulations to build six-hour cognitive endurance.

Do not use a fixed attempt strategy without reading the marking rule displayed for that section. On a partial-mark multiple-answer question, omitting or adding an option can have a different consequence from a single-correct MCQ. Numerical entry also needs careful units, rounding and permitted input format.

Paper-day strategy

Treat Paper 1 and Paper 2 as one combined competition, not two independent chances. Start each section by reading its marking instructions and scanning the questions, then secure high-confidence marks before spending extended time on a difficult problem. Maintain subject balance because rank-list qualification uses minimum marks in each subject. A very high Mathematics score cannot compensate for Physics or Chemistry below its required minimum.

Use the break between papers for food, hydration and recovery rather than detailed answer discussion, which can disturb focus without changing Paper 1. Carry the downloaded admit card and permitted original photo identification, report within the stated biometric/frisking window, and follow the computer-terminal instructions. Calculators, phones, watches, electronic devices and unauthorised material are prohibited unless the official candidate instructions expressly state otherwise. If a technical issue occurs, notify the invigilator immediately instead of attempting to fix the terminal yourself.

After the exam, download the recorded responses and compare them only with the official provisional key. Submit feedback through the official channel within its window, then use the final key and declared result for admission decisions. Coaching keys can help with early review but are not authoritative.

Result and qualifying cutoff

JEE Advanced publishes aggregate marks, subject marks, rank-list status and category ranks as applicable. Rank-list inclusion requires minimum marks in each subject and a minimum aggregate, with category-wise relaxation. These qualifying marks can change annually and are not the same as an IIT branch cutoff.

Three figures must not be mixed:

  • JEE Main cutoff/top-candidate threshold to become eligible for JEE Advanced;
  • JEE Advanced minimum subject and aggregate marks for a rank list;
  • JoSAA opening and closing ranks for a particular institute, programme, category, seat pool and round.

There is no universal “IIT cutoff.” Computer Science at one IIT and Civil Engineering at another have different closing ranks, and OPEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and female-only pools are not directly comparable. Use the official https://josaa.admissions.nic.in/applicant/SeatAllotmentResult/CurrentORCR.aspx" class="inlink">JoSAA opening/closing-rank service for historical planning.

What to do after the result

A JEE Advanced rank does not automatically enter a candidate into allocation.

1. Register on JoSAA and verify candidate/category information.

2. Review the institute/academic-programme list and seat matrix.

3. Fill choices in genuine preference order and lock them before the deadline.

4. Use mock allocations to identify whether the order reflects actual preferences; mock results do not guarantee a seat.

5. After allocation, choose the permitted freeze, float or slide option with a clear understanding of its effect.

6. Upload documents, respond to verification queries and pay the seat-acceptance fee within the round deadline.

7. Track every subsequent round; an upgraded seat replaces the earlier allocation under the rules.

8. Complete institute reporting and remaining fee/payment requirements when instructed.

Freeze accepts the allotted programme without seeking upgrade. Float generally accepts while seeking a higher choice at any institute. Slide generally seeks a higher programme choice within the same institute. Candidates must read the current JoSAA Business Rules because withdrawal, exit and last-round consequences are strict.

IITs and official websites

JoSAA's institute/programme list controls participation for the applicable year. The IIT system includes:

The official portal also announced JEE Advanced/JoSAA admission for specified IISc Bengaluru BTech programmes for the referenced cycle. Confirm the current institute list and programme codes in JoSAA rather than assuming every course at an institution uses JEE Advanced.

Architecture Aptitude Test

Candidates seeking B.Arch at IITs offering it must first qualify JEE Advanced, register separately for AAT and pass it. AAT is not JEE Main Paper 2 and does not produce a separate ranked merit list for IIT B.Arch allocation; allocation uses JEE Advanced rank among AAT-qualified candidates through JoSAA choices and seat rules.

Choosing institute and branch

Compare curriculum, department strength, flexibility for branch change/minors, internship and research access, campus environment, location, cost, scholarships and verified placement reports. Place choices in the order you would genuinely accept them. Ranking an option higher merely because it appears “safe” can cause allocation to that option ahead of one you actually prefer.

Documents and final checks

Prepare the JEE Main and Advanced admit/result records, Class 10 proof of birth, Class 12 marksheet/certificate, valid category/EWS/PwD/DS documents, identity proof, photographs and JoSAA forms. Confirm the 75%/65% or top-20-percentile condition independently of the JEE Advanced rank.

Always use the applicable year's brochure and JoSAA rules. Eligibility dates, fees, paper structure, qualifying marks, institutes, programmes, seats and allocation rules can change.
