Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET)

The Karnataka Common Entrance Test—officially called the Undergraduate Common Entrance Test (UGCET) and widely known as KCET—is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admission to professional undergraduate courses in Karnataka. It is a state-level, pen-and-paper examination followed by KEA's online document verification, option entry and seat allotment.

KCET is not only an engineering test. Depending on the subjects taken, it supports engineering and technology, farm sciences, veterinary science, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Pharm, lateral-entry B.Pharm, Pharm.D, and naturopathy and yoga routes. Other courses may use NEET, NATA or qualifying-examination marks but still require KEA registration. The official starting point is the https://cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/" class="inlink">KEA portal.

Which subjects must you take?

KEA conducts Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in four separate sessions. A candidate takes the combination required for the intended course:

Course groupKCET subjects
Engineering/TechnologyPhysics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM)
Farm sciences, including agriculture, horticulture, sericulture and related programmesPhysics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology (PCMB)
Veterinary Science and Animal HusbandryPhysics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB)
Naturopathy and YogaPhysics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB)
B.Sc. NursingPhysics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB)
B.Pharm, lateral-entry B.Pharm and Pharm.DPCM or PCB, as permitted

Do not choose subjects based only on what was studied in Class 12. Choose them after checking the course's academic eligibility and rank rule in the current KEA information bulletin.

Courses that do not use the KCET score

KEA also administers counselling for routes whose entrance score comes from somewhere else:

  • Medical, dental and AYUSH admission uses NEET-UG, not KCET.
  • B.Arch admission uses NATA, not the KCET PCMB score.
  • BPT, B.Sc. Allied Health Sciences, Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics, and D.Pharm were listed by KEA as qualifying-examination-mark routes without a CET paper.

Candidates for these routes may still have to register through the common KEA application to participate in Karnataka counselling. Registration with KEA does not convert NEET, NATA or board-mark admission into “KCET admission.”

Eligibility: academic and Karnataka clauses are separate

There are two eligibility questions:

1. Does the candidate have the required Class 12 subjects and minimum marks for the course?

2. Does the candidate satisfy a KEA eligibility clause to claim the desired Government or Government-quota seat and reservation benefits?

For engineering and technology, the verified bulletin requires Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, one of Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Electronics/Computer Science as an optional subject, and English as a language. The general qualifying-examination threshold is 45% in the specified optional subjects, reduced to 40% for eligible Karnataka SC, ST, Category-I and OBC categories. A permitted alternate subject can replace Chemistry only for academic eligibility when its marks are higher; engineering rank calculation still uses PCM.

For B.Sc. Nursing, the candidate must pass Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually and obtain the prescribed PCB aggregate—45% generally and 40% for eligible Karnataka reserved categories. Non-Karnataka candidates do not receive those Karnataka-category relaxations and are not eligible for the Government share of B.Sc. Nursing seats through KEA under the examined bulletin.

Other courses have their own rules. B.Pharm and Pharm.D may accept PCM or PCB; veterinary, farm-science and naturopathy routes use their specified combinations. Students awaiting the qualifying-examination result can apply, but rank or allotment can be withheld until correct marks are received.

Karnataka seat eligibility is more complex than casual “domicile” language. The bulletin contains clauses based on study in Karnataka, parents' study/service, Kannada mother tongue, border areas, defence service and other circumstances. Reservation claims can require study, caste/income, rural, Kannada-medium or special-category certificates with prescribed countersignatures and RD numbers. Identify the exact clause first; never upload documents for a nearby but inapplicable clause.

Exam pattern

Each KCET subject paper has the same basic format:

FeaturePer subject
Questions60 multiple-choice questions
Maximum marks60
Duration80 minutes
Correct answer+1
Incorrect answer0
Unanswered answer0
Multiple options marked0

There is no negative marking. Engineering candidates take three papers for 180 questions and 180 CET marks; PCMB candidates take four papers for 240 questions and 240 CET marks. These are separate 80-minute sessions, not one continuous three-hour paper.

Answers are marked on OMR sheets with a blue or black ballpoint pen. Once a circle is inked, it cannot safely be erased; whitener, markers and multiple shading are not permitted. KEA requires candidate details, booklet version, signatures and left-thumb impression to be completed correctly. The bulletin warns that an OMR sheet without the required thumb impression will not be scanned. Preserve the carbon-copy OMR replicas as instructed.

Kannada language test and agriculturist practical test

The Kannada language test applies only to candidates claiming specified Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannadiga eligibility clauses, subject to exemptions. It is a 50-mark test at fourth-standard level, and the verified qualifying requirement is 12 marks. It is not a general language paper for every KCET candidate.

Candidates claiming the agriculturist quota for specified farm/veterinary courses have a separate 200-mark practical test on identification of agriculture-related specimens. The bulletin requires at least 50% in that practical. The quota's merit formula gives the practical substantial weight, so eligible candidates must separately track its document verification, fee and test instructions.

Syllabus and preparation

The official KCET syllabus is based on Karnataka's First and Second PUC syllabi for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, as reviewed and published by the Department of School Education (Pre-University). Students from CBSE, CISCE or another board should map their chapters to KEA's official syllabus rather than assuming perfect NCERT equivalence.

Physics

Build formula fluency only after understanding units, graphs and limiting cases. Practise mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, optics, modern physics and semiconductors according to the published syllabus. With one mark per question and no penalty, fast elimination and calculation accuracy matter.

Chemistry

Balance physical calculations, inorganic trends and organic reaction logic. Revise named textbook facts but also practise equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, kinetics, bonding, coordination chemistry and reaction conversions. Keep a compact error log for signs, units, reagents and exceptions.

Mathematics

Engineering rank uses both CET and qualifying-examination PCM performance, making steady board-level mastery valuable. Practise algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, probability and statistics in timed 60-question sets.

Biology

For PCB and PCMB routes, focus on textbook wording, diagrams, genetics, cell biology, physiology, reproduction, ecology, evolution, biotechnology and human health. Train rapid recall without sacrificing close reading of qualifiers such as “incorrect,” “except” and “most appropriate.”

OMR strategy

Complete subject-wise mocks in exactly 80 minutes. Use one method consistently: solve and shade in small blocks, or mark answers in the booklet and transfer at fixed intervals. Never leave all OMR transfer to the last minutes. Since wrong answers have no penalty, attempt unresolved questions after eliminating options—but avoid rushed double shading.

How KCET ranks are calculated

KCET produces course-specific ranks, not one universal rank for every programme.

  • Engineering/Technology: CET PCM marks and qualifying-examination PCM marks are taken in equal proportions.
  • Farm sciences: performance in PCMB in CET and the qualifying examination is taken in equal proportions for the common rank, subject to special agriculturist-quota rules.
  • Veterinary: CET PCB marks determine the regular rank under the verified rule.
  • B.Pharm, lateral-entry B.Pharm and Pharm.D: the higher of CET PCM or PCB is used.
  • Naturopathy and Yoga: QE and CET PCB marks are taken in equal proportions.
  • B.Sc. Nursing: CET PCB marks determine rank under the verified bulletin.
  • Architecture: merit follows the applicable NATA/KEA rule, not KCET PCM marks alone.

This is why a student can receive several ranks—or have one rank withheld—on the result sheet. Verify Class 12 marks immediately. If marks change after revaluation, submit the updated marks record through the process notified by KEA so the rank can be revised.

Cut-offs and college research

KCET cut-offs are closing ranks from seat allotment, not minimum marks needed to “pass” the paper. They vary by college code, branch, seat category, quota, round and sometimes special eligibility. A GM engineering closing rank cannot be compared directly with a rural, Kannada-medium, Hyderabad-Karnataka/Kalyana Karnataka or another reserved-seat code.

Use KEA's official round-wise cut-off PDFs and seat matrices. Start with the https://cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/" class="inlink">UGCET admission area and the official option-entry portal linked there. For each possible choice, record:

  • college code and exact campus;
  • programme/branch code;
  • category and quota applicable to you;
  • seat count and fee type;
  • closing rank across more than one round; and
  • accreditation, affiliation, location, hostel and placement evidence from the institution.

The complete college list changes with the approved seat matrix, so the KEA matrix—not a frozen blog list—is authoritative. Well-known engineering choices commonly found in Karnataka counselling include https://uvce.ac.in/" class="inlink">University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, https://rvce.edu.in/" class="inlink">R.V. College of Engineering, https://www.bmsce.ac.in/" class="inlink">B.M.S. College of Engineering, https://www.msrit.edu/" class="inlink">Ramaiah Institute of Technology, https://pes.edu/" class="inlink">PES University, https://www.dsce.edu.in/" class="inlink">Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, https://jssstuniv.in/" class="inlink">JSS Science and Technology University, https://nie.ac.in/" class="inlink">The National Institute of Engineering and https://bit-bangalore.edu.in/" class="inlink">Bangalore Institute of Technology. Their inclusion, branches and seat types must be confirmed in the current KEA matrix.

Build an option list based on course fit, not only last year's closing rank. A long, correctly ordered list protects against movement across rounds; entering only a few “dream” options creates unnecessary risk.

What happens after the result?

1. Download the result and check every displayed rank, qualifying-examination mark and reservation detail.

2. Complete online or in-person document verification as assigned and obtain the verification slip/eligibility confirmation.

3. Review the official seat matrix, fee structure and previous cut-offs.

4. Enter options in genuine preference order. KEA allocates the highest available option, so do not place an unwanted college above one you prefer.

5. Study the mock-allotment result and reorder, add or delete options during the permitted window.

6. After allotment, understand the available choice/acceptance action, pay the required fee and download the admission order within the official deadline.

7. Report to the allotted institution with originals and complete admission.

8. If continuing to later rounds, understand which options remain, which are removed and whether an accepted seat is retained.

KEA states that first-round options generally carry forward; fresh options cannot simply be rebuilt for every round, although new options may be added for newly included seats and higher options may be altered under notified rules. Read each round's instructions instead of relying on an older “Choice 1/2/3/4” explainer.

Seat cancellation can trigger refund loss or penalties, especially after prescribed deadlines. Never abandon a seat informally; surrender it only through KEA's notified procedure.

Common mistakes

  • Calling every KEA counselling route “KCET,” including NEET and NATA admissions.
  • Taking PCM when the intended course requires Biology, or missing Mathematics for farm-science PCMB ranking.
  • Assuming all non-Karnataka candidates receive Karnataka quota or category benefits.
  • Treating 180 questions as a single three-hour engineering paper.
  • Failing to verify board marks, causing a withheld or incorrect rank.
  • Spoiling the OMR with multiple marks, whitener or missing thumb impression.
  • Filling options by predicted cut-off rather than genuine preference.
  • Missing a separate non-CET registration, language test or agriculturist practical requirement.
